Dr. Barbara Kirch is the owner of Cats Love Housecalls. Originally from Chicago, she moved to North Carolina in 1992 to escape the long winters and to attend UNC-Chapel Hill for a degree in Library and Information Science. At the same time she found work as a veterinary assistant at a small animal clinic in Carrboro, NC. She soon realized that she preferred spending her time helping people care for animals and changed her career path to veterinary medicine. She attended North Carolina State University (NCSU) for her veterinary training, graduating in 2002. After working in small animal practices in Durham, NC and Alexandria, VA, Dr. Kirch joined a cats only practice in 2004 where she remained for 12 years until leaving to pursue additional training in shelter medicine.

Dr. Kirch is a professional responder for the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response (FIR) team. She finds her periodic work with this incredible team to be some of the most rewarding she has ever experienced. One of her favorite deployments was working with the FIR team when they quarantined 500 cats in New York City to successfully contain an influenza outbreak.

As  a regular animal care volunteer at Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, NC Dr. Kirch enjoys working outdoors and spending time around incredible wild cats. Carolina Tiger Rescue offers scheduled public tours and gladly accepts donations

Dr. Kirch also volunteers for Operation Catnip in Raleigh and at the Animal Protection Society (APS) of Durham helping to socialize shelter cats with her 11 year old son (a cat whisperer in training).

During the summer, Dr. Kirch is a turtle rehabilitator for the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine’s Turtle Rescue Team; she especially enjoys caring for snapping turtles.

In 2016, Dr. Kirch enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine program through the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Online Program offered through University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Kirch is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Shelter Veterinarians, American Association of Feline Practitioners, and the Cornell Feline Health Center
